Q: What kinds of class activities can I expect in a ceramics course at CPCC?
A: Instruction is given through lectures, slideshows, demonstrations, class discussions. and class activities. Students have lots of time in class to work in clay.
Q: Is it OK to take a ceramics course that is part of a college transfer program for personal enrichment?
A: Yes, as long as you understand that the course content and level of instruction are mandated by the State of NC, and that the Instructor cannot change them to suit your desires.
Q: How many ceramics courses do you offer?
A: We offer Ceramics I, II, III, IV and Studio. They are designed to be taken in sequence; when you take Ceramics II, for example, we assume you have already learned what is taught in the pre-requisite, Ceramics I.
Q: What will I learn in each one?
A: Ceramics I gives you an introduction to basic techniques, aesthetics and history of ceramics. Ceramics II focuses on the basic techniques, aesthetics and history of pottery thrown on the wheel. Ceramics III, IV and Studio give you the opportunity for self-directed study in ceramic sculpture or pottery, coupled with exercises given by the Instructor to expand your awareness of clay bodies, slip and engobes, firing processes, glaze materials and glaze formulation.
Q: How do I get a pre-requisite waived?
A: If you take Ceramics I at CPCC, the pre-requisite is automatically waived. If the Instructor or Discipline Chair thinks you have learned all the material given in a prerequisite course somewhere else, s/he will waive the pre-requisite. This usually means you have taken that course at another college.
Q: If I audit the course, do I have to do the assignments and take the exams?
A: If the Instructor allows you to audit the course, you must participate by coming to all the classes and doing all the assignments. You do not have to take exams. If you audit, you will not receive college credit.
Q: At what times do ceramics courses meet?
A: We offer ceramics courses in the morning, afternoon and evening. They meet twice a week, 3 hours per class.
