Seven Bodies
by Peggy Rivers

An exhibition of work created since the late 1990s, representing seven themes produced in different bodies of work since Rivers moved to the Carolinas in 1997.

About the Artist
Rivers moved here after spending eight years in New York City where she earned a Masters in Fine Arts in painting from Columbia University. She was a McColl Center for Visual Art Affiliate Artist in 2001-2002 and was chosen "Artist of the Year 2002" by the critics of Creative Loafing magazine. One of her works is currently included in the Mint Museum of Art's exhibition Revelation: A Fresh Look at Contemporary Collections that will run through September 19, 2004.

Known as a colorist, she often employs glazing and other techniques that create an extra dimension of space in her paintings that range from small works to very large canvases. Although not reflective of her entire career as an artist, Seven Bodies is the first retrospective of several years of Rivers' work to be on view in the Charlotte area. As Rivers' notes "the show presents the development of my painting since arriving in the South. I am constantly pushing my work to make new meaning out of my experience so it changes frequently. Even though these changes seem radical sometimes, my work is really more evolutionary. You can follow the different threads that tend to weave in and out of my paintings over the years. I think people who see these paintings will appreciate the similarities as well as the differences."

Landscapes and Language
by Lou Green

About the Artist
Lou Green is a visual artist and writer whose paintings and drawings continue to explore the connection between word and image. Landscape and Language is a series of new paintings about which she says, “Though I paint orchid leaves, crepe myrtle trunks and bromeliad in the abstract, with a poet’s sensibility I see form as paradox, absolute and lyrical: a language at once sophisticated and quiet, childlike and musical.”
Lou lives and works in Davidson.
